Recomendations eh? Well I just started playing the Dungeons and Dragons v4.0 ruleset with my wife and some local friends. If you've never played D&D before I highly recommend this version as it streamlines combat without sacrificing the complexity of an encounter. One of the other nice features is the ability to print out your powers and abilities on cards for quick reference during gameplay. You can check out some of the changes
here. In the old days of v1.0-3.5 it was up to each player to essentially memorize the text of a power or ability to keep combat flowing, or at the least have the book the power came from handy to look it up. You all can imagine how bogged down a session can get if you have to stop every round to look something up. Although the D&D community at large has widely varying opinions on the new ruleset, as it is a significant change from previous versions, My wife and I are very much enjoying it. I am an oldschool player whereas my wife is essentially a new player, and we are both having a good time.
